TELECOM
California
The legislature has sent two bills to the Governor for signature. The first would require a portion of the California Advanced Service Fund (CASF) be allocated to increase broadband networks in public housing communities across the state. The second would expand the eligibility for CASF funding and allow an entity that is not a telephone corporation to be eligible to apply to participate in the CASF program.
New York
The PSC is seeking comments on Verizon’s plan for construction of a fiber optic wireline network to provide phone and broadband service in western Fire Island, in place of Voice Link as the sole service offering and withdrawal of its authority to use Voice Link as the sole service offering in other geographic areas. Comments are due by September 30, 2013. See TMI Regulatory Bulletin dated 9/16/13.
Pennsylvania
The PUC issued a Press Release reminding consumers that mandatory 10-digits dialing is set to begin September 21, 2013, for residential and business customers within the existing 570 area code. The new 272 area code has been added to the 570 area code region, which generally covers the northeastern portion of the state and serves communities such as Scranton, Williamsport, and Wilkes-Barre. Beginning October 21, 2013, customers in the 570 area code region requesting new service, an additional line, or in some cases, moving their service may be assigned a number in the new 272 area code.
