The USDA announced it is investing $9 million to provide broadband service in unserved and underserved rural areas in Virginia.  In rural Virginia, Scott County Telephone Cooperative will use a $9 million grant to deploy a fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network to connect 7,496 people, 416 farms, 97 businesses, a fire station, a town hall and two educational facilities to high-speed broadband internet in Scott County. The FCC issued a Public Notice announcing the process by which Eligible Telecommunications Carriers (ETCs) must report the extent to which their networks contain or use potentially prohibited equipment or services provided by Huawei Technologies Company (Huawei), ZTE Corporation (ZTE), or their subsidiaries, parents, or affiliates, and the costs associated with removing such equipment and replacing it with equivalent equipment. NTIA released the first annual report showing continuing efforts to repurpose parts of the nation’s radiofrequency spectrum to meet the future communications needs of commercial and federal users. The report shows that the United States already leads the world in spectrum available for 5G technology and is working to more-than-double the radio spectrum available for the next generation of wireless network technology.  Read More

U.S. Senators Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Brian Schatz (D-HI) and U.S. Representatives Doris Matsui (D-CA) and Brett Guthrie (R-KY), announced the introduction of the “Supplementing the Pipeline for Efficient Control of The Resources for Users Making New Opportunities for Wireless (SPECTRUM NOW) Act”. This bill facilitates the speedy deployment of 5G by allowing government agencies to become more efficient and effective in their spectrum use and requiring key mid-band frequencies be made available for commercial wireless use. Chairman Pai’s theme for the July 10, 2019 meeting is “A Giant Leap For 5G.”  The focus will be on taking important steps towards advancing 5G coverage and capacity.  The FCC plans to accomplish this by opening up the 2.5 GHz band for 5G as well as conducting a high-band spectrum auction.  The meeting will also concentrate attention on closing the digital divide by considering a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and Declaratory Ruling covering what the FCC calls “multiple tenant environments,” or MTEs.
