Senate Commerce Committee Introduces Data Privacy Bill; Announces Hearing on Current State of Broadband and Will Examine FCC Initiatives

First the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee announced the introduction of a new data privacy bill, titled the COVID-19 Consumer Data Protection Act. The legislation would provide all Americans with more transparency, choice, and control over the collection and use of their personal health, device, geolocation, and proximity data. The bill would also hold businesses accountable to consumers if they use personal data to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

House Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), full-Committee Ranking Member Greg Walden (R-OR), Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Ranking Member Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) sent a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai expressing their concern about reports of a massive database of precise location information on hundreds of millions of consumers, known inside Google as “Sensorvault,” and requesting a briefing and answers on how this information is used both inside and outside the company.  Read More

Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) have written to the FCC to demand an investigation into several mobile carriers’ throttling and inadequate disclosures to customers.  In responses the Senators’ earlier letters, the carriers denied that they selectively impair or degrade video streaming.   Read More
