FCC’s Wheeler, “It’s time to act with dispatch” on IP Transition

TMI and FCC IP TransitionFCC Chairman Tom Wheeler’s most recent blog post says “it is time to act with dispatch” on IP transition issues. According to his blog, the FCC’s Technology Transitions Policy Task Forcewill make a presentation at the FCC’s December 12, 2013, Open Meeting “with the expectation that the January meeting will include consideration of an Order for immediate action.”

The Transition of the PSTN to IP Technology

That is, as technological advancements emerged they were deployed in the network through cooperation by all participants, for the good of the network as a whole. Signaling systems are examples of such cooperation. When outpulsing and automated switches displaced switchboard operators, when DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency) and MF (Multi-Frequency) displaced outpulsing and more recently when SS7 displaced DTMF and MF the PSTN moved, in concert, to implement those changes for the benefit of service providers and subscribers alike.
