Today's Regulatory Mix:  California Provides Staff Proposal on Interim Inmate Rate Relief and Requests Comments, Canada Delays Implementation of STIR/SHAKEN

The California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) requests comment to Staff’s Proposal on Interim Rate Relief for Inmate Calling Services (Proposal). The Proposal recommends adopting current federal interstate inmate calling rate caps as interim intrastate rate caps, including caps on ancillary charges. The Proposal suggests the PUC take immediate action and adopt the intrastate inmate rate caps until the PUC is able to adopt permanent rates.

CRTC logo on wallCanada Delays Implementation of STIR/SHAKEN 

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (Commission) issued a decision delaying implementation of STIR/SHAKEN.  STIR/SHAKEN requires telecommunication service providers (TSPs) to authenticate and verify caller identification information for Internet Protocol (IP)-based voice calls as a condition of offering and providing telecommunication services.  The June 30, 2021 deployment date has been pushed back until November 30, 2021.  Additionally, TSPs are directed to file a readiness assessment report with the Commission by August 31, 2021 followed a status report every six months beginning on May 31, 2022 in the format set forth in the decision.
